I definitely had a general design plan but knowing what I wanted going into the design center made it flow so much easier. The Clairmont house plan works with the landscape outside and has excellent planning inside. With an open floor plan and a separate Great Room this house also allows for future expansion on the lower level.

I'm a big fan of homes with open floorplans, adequate dining space , and abundance of storage . This particular outlet is being switched the other way around into the pantry so that I can put the toaster in there without having to pull it in and out of a cabinet. Before I switched it, I double checked to make sure we had enough plugs around the area for when I hang garland at Christmas. My husband has higher voltage plugs in the garage for his tools.
If you do tile, make sure you get the correct grout color. Ask your builder where they feel you should look for flooring. They often have developed relationships in the industry and know where the best prices and selection are.
Last and final step
We made sure we had outlets outside for the back patio. These are things I probably never would have thought of but having done this once, we've got a little more of an idea of what we need/want. If we were to build again, I'm sure we'd learn what we'd want to change. An empty nesters needs are different than a family of four. If you do not plan to live in your first home forever, then avoid expensive add-ons unless they add value to your house and will increase the resale value once you are ready to move.
Thus, it is a thin line between overstepping and sitting on the sidelines that needs caution. Visit the showroom and have a clear picture of how the house will look. You can also inquire what gets included in your plan and how much you will have to pay for those not included.

We live in SoCal, the cost of the houses throughout Socal are absolutely ridiculous and they're not getting any better. Homes that are basic are going for atleast 550k-650k in our area. We feel we can do much better and save much more money since her family has owned the land.
While it doesn't look like much is getting done, it probably is. The next step was getting the outside closed up and starting on the internal workings so they can get that drywall up. The name of the game here is to compare, compare, and compare. Make sure to allow plenty of time to look at at least 7-10 different local granite places.

Be patient to let the entire picture unfold rather than make changes at every step. Alterations during construction can cause a massive blow to your bank account and increase the construction period. Avoid making significant structural alterations during the building process by ensuring that everything you want gets captured in the plan.
